What are Hash Browns?

Hashed Brown Potatoes, as it was originally called, is a staple breakfast food in UK and North America. It is a simple preparation of pan fried julienned potatoes. Now there are many versions of it available across the countries.

Breakfast Hash Brown Recipe becomes air fryer recipe?

I had my first tryst of hash browns when I was visiting Germany. Well of course, you will tend to overlook the golden bite sized pieces of hash browns amidst the enormous ensemble of Bratwurst, sausages of different kinds, cold cuts of a German Breakfast spread. But then I did try the hash browns and was surprised how good the humble potato can be in its gooey crispy form!

You can have the breakfast hash browns with fried eggs and toast for your breakfast or have it as a side in your Sunday Brunch! I love the skillet version – because the original English recipe calls for butter and potato fried in butter – now you know why I like it more.

But you can’t listen to your tongue all the time. This hash brown recipe is the leaner and cleaner version of the original one made in an air fryer with hardly any oil.

How to make Breakfast Hash Browns?

Most important thing that we need to keep in mind is to strip the potato of its starch as much as possible to make it leaner. So start off by soaking the shredded potatoes in cold water and drain the water when it starts turning cloudy. Repeat this step again to get rid of the excess starch.

Spray a non-stick pan with cooking spray or brush the bottom of the pan with a tiny amount of oil and add the potatoes over medium heat. We are not going to cook and brown over gas, this step is only to remove the rawness of the potato.

In this hash brown recipe, we’ll use cornstarch or corn flour to add to the crispiness. Mix this shredded potato with seasoning and dust little corn flour. Spread it on a plate and refrigerate for 20 minutes. This will help in giving the hash browns some shape. You can skip this and make random shapes pressed in the palms of your hands.

  1. Hash browns are an American breakfast staple. You can even buy them frozen in bags at the grocery store. In the South, they are served with gravy. In the West, onions and green peppers are added. Sometimes they are shredded, as in your pictures, but “home style” are no more than cubed potatoes.
What is an air fryer? I am not familiar with this.
Thank you, Tina, for another delicious recipe. I will wash my potatoes from now on and let them rest in the refrigerator.

    1. Thanks for dropping by Cheryl. Air fryer is an appliance that allows oil less frying. I realized i forgot to click photos of the air fryer itself! I’ll edit and add.

  2. Hey Hash Browns are very very popular with all of us and loved the way you have described each and every step . Might be next time when we are in Bangalore we will raid your kitchen for this and then the main course will come

  3. Wow Tina your hash browns made my mouth water. We have almost stopped eating potato and deepfrying is a no no. I’m scared on investing in an airfryer. My mom has one and she has used it only three times in the year. And every time she uses it everyone says ” what ? so dry! ” I’d rather not fry than air fry.

  4. loved your version of hash browns especially as it’s super low on oil. meaning to buy an air fryer and now am very tempted too!

  5. I love potatoes and hash brown has always been a favourite. Your mouth watering and healthy recipe makes me want to go and buy an air fryer right now. It’s long due

  6. I like hash brown potatoes and often make them for my kids. This is an interesting version, discovered two things here – Corn flour to make it crispy and soaking the shredded potatoes in cold water. Thanks for the tips, I’m going to try them soon.
Nice to visit your blog again. Good Luck to you Tina!

  7. The hash browns look so tempting. And they are healthy too because of the air fryer. Thank you for sharing the recipe.

  8. They look absolutely scrumptious. There’s something about potatoes that is so comforting that it makes me want to reach out for them right away. I once watched someone making hash browns on a cookery show and it sounded so complicated – you had to mash them just so, then add butter just that much and then fry them. Your recipe seems within reach, but first I need to get myself an air fryer.

  9. I am already in love with this amazing dish just looking at the pictures and this seems healthy too – air fryer hmm… I am subscribing to the blog already πŸ™‚

  10. We first had hash browns in the US and we loved it. I used to avoid as they are full of oil but this is a great idea to air fry them. Thanks for sharing Tina.

  11. these look yummylicious! Air fryer is a great health step. We are still in 2 minds about buying an air fryer, but this recipe is easy to make. The photos are great..mouthwatering!

  12. Hi Tina! Your post took me back to my good old day in California and Wisconsin. Hash browns are an American breakfast staple and I couldnΒ΄t resist these crunchy beauties Yes! The ones you get in the restaurants are laden with fat but they taste so good. I did try making them at home…frying them on a skillet ..it was okay but not as great as the ones served in the restaurant joints. I really liked your leaner, cleaner version of this classic fave. Maybe the next purchase is an Air fryer…whatsay? I invite you to read my blogposts at https://thetinaedit.com/. Cheers! πŸ™‚

  13. Hash browns have always delighted me. but I find the fried version a little too much for my ever expanding husband’s tummy. I am definitely going to try this oil free version.
Thanks for sharing this amazing recipe. And the photographs were a treat to the eyes!

  14. Hash browns and fried egg – yummm!!! I swear I was looking for the recipe since quite a few days. Thanks for this, Tina. I’m glad you posted step-by-step photos as well πŸ™‚

  17. Hey Tina!
We have an air-fryer lying around the house since a long, long time. Guess it’s time to put it to good use.
I’d like to know if the recipe will work if the shredded potatoes are prepped and refrigerated a night before?

  18. I am a big fan of hash browns but always used to wonder on how to avoid them since I felt that they were full of oil. But your recipe using an air fryer seems to have come at the right time. Guess need to keep this post as one of the favourites for future reference when I get an air-fryer which should hopefully be sooner rather than later :D.

  19. How I wish even I could be such a great cook and lure 1 and half men at my house as well. Sigh.

It appears so yum…may be I gonna order hash browns on my next restaurant visit

  20. Wow looks yummy! I love hash-browns but never made it at home as it takes lot of oil, which is a reason why i prefer to have it when i go to a food outlet rather than preparing at home. One question though, I do not have an airfryer so can it be made in Oven? If you have tried please let me know.

  21. Whenever I visit your food blog, the feeling of why am I not in Bangalore hurts the most. It’ so difficult to not drool over the pics you post along with the recipe. You always say that my pics are good but your photography is something I admire a lot. 😊 Ab mein bangalore aaya to aapke ghr ka visit will be on top of my list. Also, plz convey my kisses to Bluey 😊

    1. Thank you so much Saumy. Bluey sends hugs to you too. I am very skeptical about my photography skills because I am never happy about them. After the shots and edits I always think, it could have been better, clearer etc etc. I hope I’ll get better at it some day. But I appreciate the love that you always send to my blog. Thank you so much.

  22. I love hash brown. One of the reason I go for McD breakfast menu !! And I have reduced off late due to the oil am soon gonna investing air fryer.thanks for this post.

  23. Tina I am always very impressed by your blogpost’s structure – it shows how much pain you have taken to put things together. Hash brown were my savior in europe since I am a vegetarian and what to do types all the time : D

Will try this as home with an air fryer πŸ™‚

  24. Okay, so this is the first time I’m here on your blog and I have to say that your virtual home is really beautiful! I loved how you’ve incorporated the rating option in comments. Is it a plugin you’re using? I’d like to try it on some of my blogs too.
Now, the recipe: This is definitely a cleaner and leaner version of the hash browns. Even though I’m trying to put on weight, less fats are still a plus. I’m sure they’ll taste equally well with homemade mint chutney or an avocado dip.
Something just for me: Do you have any more vegan recipes too which are easy to cook? Something different, and yet resonating with our Indian taste buds (so my mother doesn’t roll up her eyes)! πŸ˜›
