This cookies and cream parfait is a no bake treat that is as easy as it is delicious, decadent and gorgeous. Made with Oreo cookies and layers of cream and chocolate this cookies and cream parfait is a winner from the word go.
I am actually in the no-bake dessert mode. I was debating over a pound cake, pavlova or a parfait and I obviously chose the parfait over the other two because it’s decadent and extremely easy. The cookies and cream parfait are one of my favorite parfaits because of the play of flavors and colors.
What is a Parfait?
Did you just ask what a parfait is? Parfait is a French style of dessert that was developed by Dave Marshall somewhere in the 1970s. In French, Parfait means perfect. The original French recipe is a combination of sugar, cream, and egg which is made into a smooth custard. But the American version is the one with a lot more texture and variety. The US version of parfait is a layered dessert with a combination of crunchy granola or cookies, custard, whipped cream, and fruits. I am in love with parfaits especially the American version because it offers an explosion of flavors, is easy and quick. The cookies and cream parfait is very pleasing to the eyes. – for me.
What are the layers made of in the cookies and cream parfait?
When I have to use a cookie for a dessert I generally stick to Oreos because they are super awesome. I think I have made loads of desserts with Oreo and each time I have loved it. The cookies and cream parfait is a fairly simple no bake dessert recipe. It has all the crunch from the cookies and all the smoothness from the cream. There are various versions of the cookies and cream parfait, some use chocolate chunks or chips, some even uses bits of brownie, some people leave whole cookies and some use a cookie dust. But I have a special layer – the chocolate custard layer. And believe me you – the chocolate custard makes all the difference. Sometimes I also add some Baileys or any other coffee liqueur for an added zing to the dessert. But since my little one digs into the desserts I left skipped the liqueur part this time.
How to make cookies and cream parfait with Oreo?
There are two important layers in this cookies and cream parfait recipe – the chocolate custard and whipped cream. I start off by making the chocolate custard because it requires some chilling time. Heat milk with sugar and add custard powder to it to make a thick custard. You can use a store bought chocolate custard powder too but I prefer real chocolate. Take some chocolate chips or chocolate chunks in a mixing bowl. Once the custard is starting to thicken, pour it over the chocolate and stir well. The chocolate will melt making the custard even thicker and darker. Chill this custard in the freezer for half an hour.
The next step is to whip some cream. I whipped my cream without any sugar because the parfait has enough chocolate and sugar. I like the uneven sweetness levels in the dessert. Always whip cream on an ice bath. Take some ice and water in a bowl, place another smaller mixing bowl inside it with cream and whip with a hand mixer.
Pro Tip – 6 minutes of whipping gives perfect whipped cream with soft peaks. Don’t over whip, you don’t want butter!
Once these two layers are ready you are ready to pour it into a parfait glass or any dessert glass. Break Oreo cookies roughly and place in as the first layer, followed by a few spoonful of the chocolate custard. Spoon in a few spoons of whipped cream. Repeat the layers once more and top it up with an Oreo Cookie.
Chill the parfait in the refrigerator for half an hour and serve cold. It is super awesome. I finished a glassful last night as I was writing a post for my lifestyle blog! I am okay with such sins.
Do try it and let me know. I am sure you will like it.
