good carbs vs bad carbs

Carbohydrate has suddenly gained a villain status when it comes to fitness and diet. Everyone is shunning it and avoiding it because of the eternal debate of good carbs vs bad carbs. Yes there are healthy carbohydrates that are much required by the body. They are your sources of energy and banishing them from your life like an unscrupulous thug isn’t a great idea. You need to know which are the god carbs and how to add them in your diet. Here I am sharing you 5 Healthy Carbs that you should include in your diet.

First, why do you need Carbohydrates?

Carbs are one of the three macronutrients that your body needs to meet and sustain the metabolism and energy levels. When digested carbohydrates turn into glucose, which is then burned to produce heat and adenosine triphosphate (a molecule that stores and releases energy as needed by the cells in our body).

Good Carbs Vs Bad Carbs:

The moment you want to consider a change of diet, somehow, the first targets to be eliminated from the list are fats and carbs, without realizing we need both of these macronutrients for our body. Apart from sugars, carbohydrates also contain fiber, which our gut bacteria turn into short-chained fatty acids. So make good choices instead of making carbohydrates a complete no no. The first thing to do in this debate of Good Carbs Vs Bad Carbs is to stay away from refined carbs – they don’t contain fiber and are stripped of key minerals and vitamins.

The Bad Carbs to Avoid

Anything that reads refined has been stripped off its nutrients. Avoid these bad carbs in your diet.

  1. White Sugar
  2. Fruit Juices
  3. Aerated drinks
  4. White bread
  5. French Fries
  6. Potato Chips
  7. White rice
  8. Refined flour
  9. Regular white Pasta
  10. Regular Cookies

Brown Rice

Ours is largely a rice eating population but we end up eating white rice mostly. White rice is polished and is stripped of its nutrients. Whereas Brown Rice is a whole grain with antioxidants and fiber. It is a rich source of manganese. If you suffer from diabetes, and crave for rice, switch white rice with brown because brown rice is known to lower blood sugar levels and decrease the risk of type 2 diabetes.

Buckwheat

Buckwheat is filled with fiber, protein, antioxidants, and aromatic compounds. It is a good substitute for wheat. Even if the name suggests, you must know, buckwheat is not a kind of wheat. It is actually seeds of a grass like that is closely related to rhubarb. Buckwheat is gluten free and extremely healthy.

You can add cooked buckwheat groats in salads, or blend them and make pancakes. There are many ways of enjoying buckwheat. Now, isn’t that one of the Healthy Carbs that you should include in your diet?

Quinoa

Quinoa is a superfood that is gluten-free, high in protein and one of the few plant foods that contain all nine essential amino acids. It is high in fiber, magnesium, B vitamins, iron, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, vitamin E and various beneficial antioxidants. I like adding cooked quinoa in salads or make a healthy bowl of quinoa with roasted vegetables.

Dates

They are super famous across the middle east. Many break their Ramadan fasts with dates because it gives you a good dose of energy. Dates are sweet yet high in fiber which benefits your digestive health by preventing constipation. They are also high in antioxidants which protect your cells from free radicals.

One of the best ways to include dates in your diet is by substituting sugar in desserts with mashed dates! I use that quite a lot!
